How to Prep Your Pool for a Hurricane

When a hurricane approaches, preparing your pool is crucial to minimize damage and ensure
safety. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your pool ready for the storm:

1. Do Not Drain Your Pool: Contrary to what you might think, do not drain your pool. The
weight of the water helps to counteract the pressure from groundwater and keeps the pool
structure stable during heavy rains. Draining the pool can lead to structural damage.

2. Balance the Water Chemistry: Before the storm hits, ensure your pool water is balanced.
This includes checking the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels. Adding a dose of chlorine shock
can help keep the water clear and prevent algae growth during the storm.

3. Turn Off and Protect Electrical Equipment: Turn off the power to your pool equipment,
including pumps, filters, heaters, and chlorinators. Remove portable equipment and store it in a
safe place. For in-ground equipment, cover it with a waterproof tarp to protect it from water
damage.

4. Secure Loose Items: Remove and store loose items such as pool toys, furniture, and
accessories. These can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Secure larger items that
cannot be stored indoors.

5. Trim Surrounding Trees and Shrubs: Trim any overhanging branches and remove dead or
weak trees around the pool area. This helps prevent debris from falling into the pool and
causing damage.

6. Add Extra Chlorine: Adding extra chlorine to your pool before the storm can help keep the
water sanitized and prevent contamination from storm debris. Use a floater to disperse the
chlorine evenly.

7. Cover Your Pool: Use a strong, durable pool cover to protect the water from debris.
However, if high winds are expected, it's best to leave the pool uncovered to avoid damage to
the cover itself.

8. Monitor the Pool After the Storm: Once the hurricane has passed, remove any debris from
the pool immediately. Check the water chemistry and balance it as needed. Inspect your pool
equipment for any damage before turning it back on.

By following these steps, you can protect your pool and ensure it’s ready for use once the storm
has passed. Proper preparation can save you time, money, and effort in post-storm cleanup and
repairs.
