Perfecting Pools in St. Marys

New pools, renovations, pool service, and commercial pools from our St. Marys showroom.

At Home on the Georgia Coast

Our St. Marys office started as an outpost of the Jacksonville team, but this stretch of the Georgia coast was growing fast, and we wanted to be part of it. So we built a full showroom in St. Marys, where you can see and touch tile, interior finishes, equipment, and hardscape without the drive to Jacksonville. Today John, Julene, Paul, and Ryan lead our projects across Glynn and Camden counties, with the Jacksonville team behind them.

John Oakes

Co-Founder

John Oakes

John brings more than 25 years of construction experience to Oak Wells Aquatics. He began in the pool industry in 2005 shooting gunite, then spent several years in heavy civil construction building highway crash walls and pavement. That work grounded him in structural concrete and large-scale jobsite management.

He earned his pool contractor license in 2010 and has been part of Oak Wells Aquatics since its beginning in 2014. He helped grow the company from structural excavation and shotcrete work into full residential and commercial pool construction.

Today John leads the field side of the business. His command of construction management, jobsite coordination, and quality control sets the standards that guide every Oak Wells build, from layout to final inspection.

Building in Glynn and Camden Counties

Marsh, dunes, live oaks, and a state-owned island — the things that shape a pool project here before the first drawing.

  • Landscape design blueprints for a pool and backyard, with a finished pool and house visible in the background.

    Permitting

Inside Brunswick city limits, the City permits; St. Simons, Sea Island, and the rest of the mainland go through Glynn County. In Camden, St. Marys, Kingsland, and Woodbine each permit their own projects, and the county handles only unincorporated areas. Old Town Brunswick and Historic St. Marys also need a Certificate of Appropriateness from their preservation boards.

  • A large house on a sandy beach at sunset, with a wooden boardwalk and a drained pool.

    Marsh-front lots

Georgia sets a 25-foot buffer along coastal marshland, measured from the line where marsh meets upland. Building inside it takes a state variance, so on marsh-front lots we locate that line early and design around it. Closer to the marsh, expect soft ground and a high water table that shape how the pool is built.

  • A large coastal mansion with an empty pool and lush vegetation, situated above a sandy beach and the ocean.

    Beachfront lots and Jekyll Island

On oceanfront lots on St. Simons and Sea Island, part of the yard often falls within the state’s Shore Protection Act jurisdiction, and a pool or deck there needs a permit from the state Shore Protection Committee, with public notice. On Jekyll Island, the land is leased from the State, so projects need Jekyll Island Authority approval as well as a Glynn County permit.

  • A large, ancient tree with a thick, gnarled trunk and sprawling branches in a sunny park.

    Live oaks on St. Simons

St. Simons has its own tree canopy ordinance, and taking down a mature live oak there needs the county’s permission. On wooded island lots, the oaks and their root zones often decide where a pool can go, so we look at the trees first and design around the ones that are staying.

  • Design materials for a pool and landscape project, including a rendering, blueprint, and tile samples, on a table in a backyard.

    HOA review

Sea Island, Frederica, Hampton Point, and Sea Palms in Glynn, and Osprey Cove, Cumberland Harbour, and Laurel Island in Camden, each review pool plans on their own schedule — typically before the permit application goes in. We’ll plan the design around your community’s guidelines from the start.

  • Screened pool and outdoor living area with a hot tub, in-pool lounge chairs, and a covered patio with furniture and a TV.

    Screen enclosures and swim season

Around here it’s about half and half: roughly as many pools are screened as open. Sand gnats near the marsh are the usual case for a screen; an open view of the marsh or the oaks is the usual case against. Unheated, the swim season runs about a month shorter than in Florida, so a heater earns its keep here.

FAQs

Planning a pool project on the Georgia coast? Start with these common questions, then talk with our St. Marys team about your property.

How do I get started on designing my new in-ground pool?

Start with a conversation about your backyard, how you want to use the pool, and your budget. We’ll help you explore the design, features, and next steps so you can make an informed decision.

What does a pool cost?

Here the number is driven less by the pool itself than by the lot: marsh buffers and dune jurisdiction, protected oaks, a high water table near the water, and whether you screen it in.

How long does a pool build take on St. Simons Island?

On beachfront and marsh-front lots, the state reviews — a Shore Protection Act permit or a marsh buffer variance — can add more time than construction itself. Inland lots move closer to a typical schedule.

Do you handle permitting in Glynn and Camden counties?

Yes. Brunswick, St. Marys, Kingsland, and Woodbine each issue their own permits; Glynn and Camden counties cover everything outside those city limits. Where a state review or Jekyll Island Authority approval is involved, we coordinate that alongside the local permit.

Can I build a pool on a marsh-front lot?

Usually, yes. Georgia’s 25-foot marsh buffer means the pool and deck generally sit landward of it — building inside it requires a state variance. We locate the marsh line early so the design starts in the right place.

Can I build a pool on Jekyll Island?

Yes, with an extra step. Because Jekyll’s land is leased from the State, your project needs Jekyll Island Authority approval in addition to a Glynn County building permit.

Should I screen my pool here?

It’s a real choice in this area — about half the pools we see are screened. Near the marsh, sand gnats tip a lot of people toward a screen; on wooded or view lots, many stay open.

What kind of pool area amenities can Oak Wells install?

We design complete pool environments, including spas, water features, poolside patios, seating, lighting, and surrounding outdoor spaces. We’ll help you explore options that suit your property and the way you want to use it.
